The next time your OM tells you he's going to go buy a new saw blade for his saw, ask him what he is going to do with the old one. Tell him you have an idea for a use for that old blade in the amateur hobby. Here's what happened to me last week:
Earlier in the week I heard a qso from a brand new ham on a repeater on vhf indicating he only had a portable and a mag mount 1/4~ antenna for his car.
Few days ago as I was emptying trash here at work, I noticed an old saw blade (7 1/2 " standard here in US) being thrown out.
Well the little mouse decided to jump in the cage in my head and started to run around it which gave me an idea.
I took the old blade and an old scrap piece of rubber hose I used 3/8'' fuel line hose, but an old garden hose would work too. Split the hose length wise and wrap it around the blade covering the teeth. Doing this will ensure that when you handle it, you won't get cut from the teeth. Use either silicone sealer or as I did, machine screw and flat washers to be sure hose won't come off. Now what you have appears to look kinda like a frisbee.
Guess what it really is? A counterpoise for a mag mount antenna.
I took that down to that new ham a couple counties south of here over the weekend and now his magmount works in the house much better. Now he doesn't have to sit in his car all night to talk.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Quote (K4TDM @ Mar. 05 2007,17:50) I have a spud gun too. Mine is made from PVC with a gas grill igniter in a cleanout cap. Lights cheap hair spray to shoot a 20 oz soda bottle (half full of water) over the tallest Georgia pine!
Real crowd-pleaser at Field Day.
TOM:
That's really getting creative as long as the YL don't miss the hairspray
