Over the past several months of building antennas and noticing the prices of aluminum and copper on the increase I've discovered something!
The next time you visit Lowe's or Menards looking for some aluminum to use for a boom for a yagi, quagi or whatever. Go to the dept where clothes line rope is sold and look for a clothes line prop rod. It is a thinner wall alum. and the plastic fittings just slide off the ends of the tube. These come in a length of 6 or 8 foot.
To save on cost of elements, go to the plumbing dept. and look for faucet supply tubing I've found lengths up to 3 feet.
Aluminum broom and mop handles also make great booms. Make sure you cut off the mop head before putting it up. My neighbors congregate and just shake their heads when they see me!
