Hi to all, and thankyou for the welcome,
I heard about this site some months back when I was contacted by another lady ham who had noticed I was doing a presentation to my local radio club about women in amateur radio, but at the time I didnt sign up. Although pc literate I have never joined up to anything like this before. Anyway, I recognise the BOF's however I sort of fall between two stools my husband is a very very keen and active radio ham so it was cant beat em..... so I joined them.
I wouldnt have done it if the licence entry hadnt been made easier by starting with the foundation - but as you see from the callsign I got bit and carried on to get my full - of which I am very proud. I do go on most days but it is mostly to talk to my husband as he travel home from work, however I am an active member of RAYNET so in the coming months will spend many of my weekends assisting with comms at local events, and of course am ready for any 'real' event that may require me.
I do play HF - but am a bit mike shy, so I tend to listen lots but talk little. Recently we also set up echolink at home but I havent really got to grips with that yet. I attend Chester & District Amateur Radio Club most weeks and am currently trying to build my next presentation - my last was a great sucess, but in my nervous state its now just a blur.
anyway that enough from me - hello again to all

Hi Lisa and welcome!
Echolink is ideal for getting over being mike shy! We have a Ladies 'Net' on Friday nights at 2130. Lin, G6HZI, set up the UKLOTA Node and at that time she sets it up as a 'private' system so other paople can't listen in and some of the YL's come on and have a 'natter'. Feel free to join us - you'll be made very welcome and there's no tech-speak, thank goodness! I sometimes run Echolink during the day so look out for my callsign and give me a shout if you like!
Well done on the Full license!

Hi Maureen,
thanks for that, I know about the nets from Lin, but havent plucked up the courage yet - quite silly really because I can spend hours dressed in dayglos being a nutter magnet talking to control via handheld in the middle of my local city centre and dont feel silly when doing my RAYNET duties, but stick me at home with all the kit and I feel stuck for words and mike shy - time will improve me I guess, tonights job is build a little valve piece of kit, and hope that I can get to the next local rally - Norbreck at Blackpool.
thnx again
Lisa

Hi Lisa, congratulations on passing the advance test. Steve has recently taken his and is still waiting for the results. I know that it was quite a jump from the intermediate to the advanced.
I do hope to pass my advanced one day. I am hoping that once the baby is born I will get some time to study the advanced book while I am on maternity leave from work, but maybe that is just wishfull thinking! lol.
Is anyone going to the rally in Wakefield this weekend? I am hoping to go but Steve is working night's so it depends on what time he gets home.

Hi Jackie, I found it a hell of a jump from intermediate to advance - however I had motivation - the arrival of a woman caused abit of surprise - polite surprise I should add, but at a later rally i bumped into one of the chaps on the intermediate course and he was 1)- stunned I had passed (actually I stormed it only got two wrong and did better than him) 2)- couldnt believe I was going on to my advanced. As far as I am aware he still hasnt done it, I have to say I found the advance by far the hardest, but I put an awful lot of prep into it and read the old RAE exam books and test questions. However on arrival at the exam centre I was greeted with stunned surprise and What are you doing here - you're a woman? And promplty challenged to do his lap top test questions with about 20 blokes all stood round me watching. It seriously shook my resolve. I am glad to say I passed and he didnt as the test questions he worked off were too simplified. I particularly hated - and I am sure Steve does too - that I had to wait for my results to be posted, and we were a test bunch if I remember correctly as ours was the first of a new style paper, so it took abit longer than normal. I felt under a great deal of pressure as many people new I had sat it and although I know they all would have been the soul of sympathy I was just desperate to pass - besides which it made operating in Germany last year much easier as I was covered under CEPT, rather than having to apply for a reciprocal licence. I did all of my licences as a new mum - so well done, I took a break from work (and am still off as she is 3 and I dont intend to go back until she is 5), the first one I sat when she was 1, the rest is history. Becca is now keen to get onto radio - but too young so she runs round the house with a duff old binatone radio that no longer transmits, calling for me or my hubby by callsign - which is hilarious! anyway chat again and good luck to steve, and congrats on baby 73 Lisa

Hi Lisa,
Yep, Steve is doing the waiting game right now and it's driving him crazy. LOL.
It's been exactly two weeks now since the exam and he is watching for the postman every day.
I will try and study for my advanced while I am off on my maternity, fingers crossed that I will do it.
I'm glad that you surprised the guy by doing your advanced! I don't think that many women go on to do it, but the more that women do, the more it encourages other women to go for it.
I bet your Becca is so cute playing radio, she is bound to go for her exams with a mum and dad in to radio.
