This is the general chat section so you can basically talk about anything that you like in here. Tell jokes, share stories, pretty much anything that doesn't fit in with the other topics. Enjoy!

I know, it's a bit strange with only a couple of us on here. I'm hoping to get a few more ladies on so that we can chat about our contacts or chat about anything really.
I'm going to post some pictures that I took at the field day at the weekend.
If you want an avatar (little picture under your name) there are some on this forum but I've also got some extra ones. Just give me an idea of what you would like if you want one.

:)Hi there, my name is Pauline and I passed my Foundation Course in July of this year. I only have a 2 m. radio so I am very limited!!! Really looking forward to getting set up with a decent rig and aerial and then I can chat away. Think this site is a good idea and hope to visit regularly. The web address came via my Radio Club which is Great Lumley Amateur Radio and Electronic Society. This is in Co. Durham where I am based.

Hi Pauline,
I nearly missed your post there!!
Well congratulations on passing your foundation, are you planning to go on and do the intermediate? I start mine in a couple of weeks, I am looking forward to it. I've had a look through the book though and it does look quite a lot harder than the foundation so I will have to start studying.
I'm the same here, I only have 2m right now. I'm not too sure on what repeaters have IRLP or Echolink but maybe I could have a look into that and see if there is any way we could talk via 2m.
It's great that the radio club passed on the site address, it seems to be taking off a bit now. I spent ages and ages emailing a load of radio clubs in UK and USA and nothing seemed to happen, but then all of a sudden we get a mention on RSGB news and loads of new members join.
Well thanks so much for joining and making an introduction. It's really nice to meet you.

Hey Zo,
I have the first lesson of the course on the 22nd of October and then the exam is approx 6 weeks later.
I've been looking at the book and it does seem quite a bit harder than the foundation. It goes in to the technical electronics side amateur radio in a lot more depth than the first exam. I think it's gonna be hard work for me because that stuff doesn't come easy to me, but hopefully I will pass my exam at the end.
I'll let you know how hard it is once I start the course.

Good Luck Again Jackie,
Thats exactly my problem and what had in the past always put me off becoming a Radio Amateur but just lately my thinking is starting to change, I am more determined somehow to at least give it ago and give it my all.
I will be supporting you from the wings.

Good Luck Jackie! It may not be as hard as you think. I thought it would be hard for me as I knew Nothing technical at all, I wasnt worried about learnig rules and regulations, but I was able to learn alot and Dave and I studied and took the tests at the same time, so I had a "study buddy" I was nervous come testing as I was the only female (all three tests) On the written tests I got 100% on both and almost perfect copy on the code (I was really nervous for that test)

Thanks to you both for the good luck wishes. Yeah, it seems to be the techical side that most women have problems with. Although we think we will have a problem with it, usually when we start studying we discover that it wasn't as hard as we thought! I know I will be ok if I put the time in and study, it's just finding the spare time. Things are really busy at work at the moment, I'm sure I will fit some time in somewhere though Zo, good luck again for your exam, I am sure you will do excellently ;D

Hi All!
I took the 'old' RAE wh in my 40's and eventually passed the Morse Test and got my full Licence with the help of my OM. I am still not technically-minded and never will be! At almost 60 years of age why change the habits of a lifetime? Hoever, to encourage those of you going for 'greater things' - if I can do it anyone can!

Hi Maureen, After reading your reply I have decided to go for the intermediate and all going well if I pass then I will attempt the full license. Thanks for putting things into perspective. 33's Zo For me I found that the General Class(equivalent to your Intermediate) wasn't as difficult as I thought. the Extra class will take more study as it is has alot more math and equations I was actually the one who convinced Dave to actually go for it. Ever since I knew him in 1980 he has always listened to shortwave and always wanted to get licensed but never did, I was used to him listening all the time he had a few qsl cards from Amatuer Radio Operators, finally (years later) I started looking into it, I said how hard could it be, so we both decided to go for it. I am proud to say I scored 100% on my tests I really wanted to learn and know.

Hi Folks!
Go for it! At the end of the day the actual operating is not so difficult - it is reading the manual that is complicated! The most important thing about operating is be good-mannered and considerate to others on the Bands!!!
Hey, maybe we'll be able to set up some skeds and Nets!!
