Well, not just the ladies here, but the other guys too.
Okay some comments from and a request for input from the Ladies On The Air. This may belong in another thread or not here at all I suppose, but as I value the insight of the LOTA group here, rather than the general populous and because I;
1) value your opinions
2) value your friendship
3) am curious (nosy) as to what you do and or have done in the past
4) in general just wonder what you gals and guys think
I want to briefly describe what we have been up to for the last little bit and divulge what I have decided (tentatively) to do today when the boil finally came to a head and well, popped and made things a bit messy.
Anyway, the 'young one' - female, who is 15 has been having issues with a group of about 30 other girls at school, ranging from 15 to 18 years old (uh yeah, we have gangs here too). Friday morning, after the 'boss lady' and I were called in to dispel a very disturbing and quite disgusting rumor that had been initiated, no doubt by one of the minion of 30, all hell broke loose Friday afternoon when my 5’2”, 100lbs daughter was worked over quite well by 4 members of this little group that were all not less than 5’6”, 250 to 300lbs each. Nothing against chunky young ladies, just stating the facts to paint a clear picture. Anywho, after picking her up at school Friday afternoon, we went back Monday morning (yesterday) for a meeting with the principal (head mistress, I believe is what they may still be called back home) and her staff. The meeting did NOT go well as the principal refused to hear ‘our’ side of the story due to the 'boss lady' getting emotional and defensive (which I rather expected and well, cannot say as I blame her, Moms are that way even more so than we Dads, believe it or not). My solution? I immediately withdrew our daughter from school to keep her out of harms way and in addition to considering THE alternative schools (one of each flavor, a Catholic school and a Southern Baptist school) we are considering, and are likely to go with home schooling.
Now here’s where it gets interesting, in SC, you must either join a Home Schoolers’ Association, or have your child/children enrolled in, for example, an accredited online school to be in compliance with state law. I am not sure at what age a child does NOT have to attend school in SC, but it would appear to be 16 years of age, not that that is really all of that relevant anyway, as not completing high school and then on to university is NOT an option we have offered to her, or likely will.
Rather than Sheryl give up her career and her $70k contribution to the family’s income (or I give up that X 2+) to be the 'young one’s' private tutor through an olde tyme homeschool kitchen table scenario, we are considering the following –
www.alliedhighschool.com/
or one of their competition that they have also been kind enough to post on their site for easy lookup and comparison shopping.
My question is this, as fully greater than 1.7% of all high schoolers are homeschooled, do any of you have any experience with taking this route? I don’t know about you gals & guys, but, when you consider what we are talking about, and that is about 1 ¾ out of every 100 high school kids in the country (The U S & A, as Borat would call it) being homeschooled, that is NOT an insignificant number. Sure, we could force her to attend a Christian school and wash our hands of it and likely have no more bad experiences, but, the prospect of homeschooling rather fascinates me. It also would appear that Allied, for example (and one of her friends ‘attends’ there and her parents speak praises of the school, the administration and the great strides their child has taken) offers a flexible but rather rigid agenda and includes actual online cyber classroom participation (meh, maybe they all do now, I dunno) which rather impresses me. Sheryl and I also enjoy somewhat flexible, non overlapping nocturnal schedules, which mean we are both, or one of us is always at home and has swapped over to a daytime lifestyle for a day, or two, or three, so, we would be there to help and assist her and each other as well.
So seriously, what do you gals & guys think, or, have I even posted enough info for you guys to make an intelligent stab at it? You all know that in important or 'real life' issues I can get way too dramatic and tend to write essays rather than posts, so, if anyone has some fills, fine, or if you need more specific information to help you help me consider where I go from here, please ask as I trust the confidence here in the LOTA forum.
